Introduction

Studio Frostbit was a small studio were all the members needed to wear multiple hats to make everything go around. I was the Level Designer, Puzzle Designer and Producer while working on our one game, Forgotten Spirts, from concept to launch.

Concept

Forgotten Spirits is a 2D puzzle plattformer sidescroller. It has multiple levels and is meant to be played by two players together, though it has the option to play alone too.

The puzzles uses levels and buttons to open doors and trigger events in the level. However, there is a second level to the level and that is the depth of the level. The game are more like two levels overlayed, where the player characters can change the layer they are on in specific places

Pre-Production

During the preproduction phase of the development of the project I sketched out and greyboxed a variety of levels to see how the puzzle aspect should work, how the layering affect

Forgotten Spirits utilizes the iconic puzzle mechanics of having levers and buttons activate doors and events in the level.

What differantiates the game and what makes it difficult to design for is the fact that there are two players, playing two different characters, that does two things.

While sketching out and designing the levels I had to balance how much each player would have to do, the amount of time where the players has to wait for the other to do an action, and how readable the level is.
